The Lowly Neeper

The neeper is a unitless parameter that pops up when dealing with power in transmission theory and electromagnetics. To convert from dB/m to Np/m, use the following conversion:

P = Po*e^(-alpha*z) where alpha is in Np/m and z is in meters
P = Po 10^(-A/10 *z) where A is in dB/m and z is in meters

Now, since we know that P = P, we can solve for alpha in terms of A and we get:

alpha = - ln(10^(-A/10))

So, if A = 1.6, then alpha = 0.368
if A = 2.6 then alpha = 0.599

hope this helps someone

UPDATE:  I have had feedback on this page and it has helped some people!  That's great.  As far as I know there are no other useful references about the neeper on the web.  If you are helped please add a link to this page so that it will grow in relevance on the search engines.
